On October 23 local time, South Africa's Mining resources and energy Minister Mantashe visited the country's Western Cape province near Mosobe Luiperd drilling well.

The explored area, known as Brulpadda, covers an area of 18,734 square kilometers about 175 kilometers off the southern coast of South Africa. The water depth varies from 200 meters in the north to 1,800 meters in the south. Total, the French exploration company, said the area could contain 1bn barrels of natural gas and large amounts of crude oil.

Luiperd began drilling in August 2020 and has so far employed 195 local South African professionals, including exploration engineers, aviation experts, hydrologists, petroleum geologists and Marine experts. As South Africa's first deep-sea oil and gas field, the field is likely to end South Africa's history of needing oil and gas imports.

Mantashe said 1.5 billion rand (620 million yuan) had been invested in the project and that the government was working "with the necessary speed" to complete the Upstream Oil Development Act to help unlock the untapped potential of upstream oil and gas reserves. The project will boost South Africa's economy.
