UN Under-Secretary-General: The window to address the climate crisis is very limited
The window left to the international community to tackle the climate crisis is very limited, and the impact of climate change will be irreversible if action is not taken soon, UN Deputy Secretary-General Liu Zhenmin warned late Wednesday.
In the evening, the Global Energy Internet Development Cooperation organization held the International Forum on Solving the Climate and Environmental Crisis. In his video address, Liu zhenmin said that while coVID-19 is the most urgent crisis facing mankind, in the long run, climate change remains the most serious challenge. Nearly five years after world leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement, many goals, such as limiting the rise in global average temperature to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, remain out of reach until now.
According to the World Meteorological Organization, the earth's average temperature is already more than 1 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with 2015-2019 being the hottest decade on record. Over the next five years, there is about a 70 per cent chance that one or more months of average temperatures will be at least 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
"In fact, we are on the brink and the window we have to deal with the climate crisis is very limited," Mr Liu said, adding that if action is not taken, the impact of climate change will be irreversible and no one will be able to stay away.
He called for the world to accelerate the transition to clean energy, achieve near-zero emissions by 2050 and speed up efforts to access electricity to people without electricity. In addition, progress should be made in such sustainable development goals as poverty eradication and the advancement of women. More than ever, there is a need to work together to solve problems and "leave no one behind."
