The Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum Was Formally Established
Energy ministers from Egypt, Cyprus and other six countries held a video conference on November 22 and signed the charter of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum, marking the formal establishment of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum.
Egypt's oil minister, Tariq Al-Mullah, signed the charter on behalf of His country, the Oil Ministry said in a statement on its website. One of the founding countries, Palestine, did not participate in the video conference.
The forum aims to strengthen oil and gas cooperation among member states, establish a regional gas trading market, accelerate the development of oil and gas resources and reduce infrastructure costs, the mullah said in a statement. The group will be based in Cairo and will admit new members in the future.
In January 2019, Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Jordan and Palestine decided to establish the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum. In the same year, Turkey signed a memorandum of understanding with Libya's national unity government on "maritime jurisdiction" in the Mediterranean, seeking a larger exclusive economic zone in the eastern Mediterranean, a move strongly opposed by Greece, Cyprus and Egypt.
