From October 26 to 30, Shanghai petroleum and natural gas trading center held the third China energy week in Shanghai, focusing on such topics as global energy investment and direction under the post-epidemic situation, global energy market and China, new infrastructure and energy future. Among them, the opportunities and challenges of addressing climate change and energy transformation, the energy transformation under the 2060 carbon neutral target, and the development of hydrogen energy industry have become hot topics.
Dai Yande, former director of the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, pointed out that China's proposal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 is of great strategic significance, but it still faces three challenges: First, China is still in the stage of economic development, and its energy demand has not yet reached the peak. Second, domestic coal consumption accounts for nearly 60% of total primary energy consumption, and carbon dioxide emission intensity per unit of energy is relatively high. Third, economic development and employment are highly dependent on energy-intensive manufacturing industries, which consume a high amount of energy per unit of GDP.
These challenges require multi-dimensional efforts to transform economic development models and energy supply models. Li Junfeng, former director of the National Center for Strategic Research and International Cooperation on Climate Change, said the carbon-neutral target has accelerated China's energy transformation, which aims to gradually wean the country off dependence on fossil fuels.
In recent years, the development of China's hydrogen energy industry has entered a stage of rapid progress, no matter it is upstream production, midstream transportation or downstream application. According to Zhu Dequan, deputy dean of the Institute of Industrial Development at Tsinghua University, the hydrogen supply chain includes transportation, distributed energy, industrial raw materials and carbon capture chains. In China, the transportation application chain will become the main force, because the hydrogen energy industry chain will be applied in commercial vehicles first. Blue hydrogen utilization is the short-term development direction of hydrogen energy industry in China, and green hydrogen production is the inevitable choice for the long-term development of hydrogen energy industry.
